Memorial Society

Founded during the perestroika period, this organisation aimed to record crimes committed in the 20th century by the USSR and protect human rights. In 2014, the organisation received so-called “foreign agent” status from the Kremlin. Between 2021 and 2022, Russia’s Supreme Court dissolved Memorial. The Memorial Society has received numerous awards in recognition of its work to commemorate the victims of Soviet totalitarianism. Throughout their work, Memorial activists strived to be the conscience of Russian society.
