Václav Havel

The leader of the Velvet Revolution and former President of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic was born in 1936 in Prague. He was a prominent writer. As a result of the Velvet Revolution, he was elected President of Czechoslovakia, later the President of the Czech Republic. Havel received the Prize for leading the democratic changes in Central and Eastern Europe, his commitment to defending human rights, and his contribution to the collapse of the communist system. He died in 2011.
